BANGALORE: Economic slowdown or not, the obsession of young students to pursue education abroad never dies, as the number of Canadian student visas have grown fourfold since 2008.
“The number of student visas have grown fourfold from 3,000 in 2008 to 12,000 in 2010,” Canadian High Commissioner Stewart Beck said. He visited the IIMB and IISc to explore the possibilities of partnership in the field of academics.
Stating that the approximate figures of visa applications last year, he said that over 1,40,000 applications were received last year alone. He added that out of this, 80,000 were temporary visas, while 24,000 were for permanent residence and 12,000 for students.
Adding to their intent to cooperate with the state on various issues, he said that Canada is keen to apply its expertise in the field of water tables and mining, if the state government requires it. “This is just an area where we have knowledge and expertise which can be used for mutual benefit,” he said and added that he had mentioned the same to the Chief Secretary during their meeting.
